The Rodeo Trail Drive - 11 Days Each year at Easter, the ranches of the Rupununi hold their annual Rodeo, which attracts participants from across the Brazilian border and visitors from around the world. It was introduced to Guyana by Ben Hart, an American from Dakota who arrived in the Rupununi by way of working on the failed Madeira Mamore railway in the Amazonian forest with Frank James (brother of the notorious outlaw Jesse James). Ben Hart married a local belle and entertained his guests one weekend by organizing a rodeo. The sport caught the attention of the local community and has grown into a yearly meeting of the vaqueros/cowboys of the the different ranches, and has become the carnival of the savannas. Dadanawa as the main provider of the horses, cattle and people, organizes a cattle drive to meet its obligations. |
